FPCCI – Reforming slowly

Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) is an umbrella body for all business associations in Pakistan. The legislative environment under which FPCCI worked until recently was non-conducive and hence turned this organization into an ineffective political battleground between two groups that were fighting for power.

In 2006, while advising on the development of Trade Organziation’s Ordinance 2006, CIPE recommended that vision, mission and objects should be clearly defined by all business associations. Moreover, to bring transparency, these should be publicly displayed on the websites of these organizations. It is encouraging to see that the FPCCI has recently updated its website describing a 10-year vision:

“As apex body, FPCCI shall endeavor to provide effective and efficient leadership and direction to trade & industry in Pakistan for optimum promotion of trade, industry, professionalism and good corporate governance.”

The website also defines the roles and responsibilities of President, Vice Presidents and Managing Committees. Details can be viewed here. Additionally, FPCCI has provided details of its proposed plan of activities in a transparent manner.

Although many businesses still question the effectiveness of this apex body, nevertheless the above shows that CIPE’s efforts have started showing impact on an organization that used to be considered as highly unprofessional and deeply politicized.
