Leadership e-learning: Self-Awareness at the Foundation of Leadership

Guides & Tools

Session Overview

Many would agree that some individuals have innate traits that allow them to lead others. Yet if genetics or heredity were the only answers, effort would not be focused on developing individuals into leadership roles, or to strengthen their capabilities as leaders. In reality, most leaders have a dominant leadership style, developed over time, and strongly influenced by their own values and experiences. However, contemporary leadership thought also suggests that leaders must adapt to the needs of their followers to be most effective. In this session we will explore these seemingly contrary ideas, through the lens of emotional intelligence (EI).

Learning Objectives

Leadership   has   been   described   as   a   life-‐long   journey.   Growing   as   a   leader   requires thoughtful self-‐exploration and self-‐awareness, and the desire to learn continuously, from self and others. At the foundation of leadership lies an understanding of the leaders own values, and how these values influence his or her “worldview”.

In this session you will:

  1. Understand the influence of context on leadership style.
  2. Articulate your personal values and how these values impact you as a leader.
  3. Identify your personal leadership profile.
  4. Understand the role that emotional intelligence plays in leadership effectiveness.
  5. Assess your own emotional intelligence and develop strategies for improving it.

This session is part of CIPE’s 5-part course, Leading People and Organizations. The next session is Effective Decision Making.
