It Pays to Be Ethical

The Ethisphere Magazine has announced this year’s list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. 99 firms were selected based on the methodology formulated by a committee of leading attorneys, professors, government officials, and organization leaders. The winners include well-known names such as Honeywell or BMW and were selected based on a combined score in the categories of Corporate Citizenship and Responsibility; Corporate Governance; Innovation that Contributes to the Public Well Being; Industry Leadership; Executive Leadership and Tone from the Top; Legal, Regulatory and Reputation Track Record; and Internal Systems and Ethics/Compliance Program.

Probably the most intriguing finding of this ranking is that the World’s Most Ethical Companies consistently outperform the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. Over the past five years, the average stock growth percentile of public World’s Most Ethical Companies has been visibly higher than that of S&P 500, providing yet another piece of evidence that businesses can do well while doing good.
