Adding Property Rights to the Index Stew

A new index just published its first report in 2007, the International Property Rights Index. The methodology is based on pulling scores from other indexes and studies and rescaling them to weight them appropriately. Interestingly, it adds gender equality into the mix, evaluating a woman’s right to own, buy, and maintain property in her name. The index also draws some direct connections between income and property rights. The index as a whole looks pretty interesting, and many of CIPE’s current and former partners worldwide supported the development of the index, including ILD, Hernando de Soto’s organization in Peru. Take a look, and let us know what you think: is this a great new tool for the development community, or a rehash of previous statistics in a new package? Comment below!
