Advocacy Training Helped FPCCI

Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) is the apex body representing all registered business associations in Pakistan. Historically, due politicization, the apex body was unable to effect the government policies towards businesses in Pakistan.  CIPE, since its inception in Pakistan started working with FPCCI and guided the management to bring the professionally experienced CEO to manage the day-to-day operation of the organization.

Recently, CIPE organized a workshop for the managing committee members on developing effective advocacy skills. John B. Cox led the two hour session, during which the FPCCI managing committee was taken through the process involved in developing an effective policy advocacy campaign.

It was great to hear that following Mr. Cox’s recommended process, FPCCI formed a three member committee to advocate to the Ministry of Commerce on the draft rules for recently promulgated Trade Organization’s Ordinance 2006.  In the next stage, the advocacy committee developed a written petition which was released to the media and presented to the Ministry of Commerce in a consultative meeting last week.  The early efforts to establish a working and transparent advocacy process seem to be working in Pakistan, now lets hope they translate into some real reforms!
