Keynote Transcript – Francis Fukuyama
Introduction:
This is my first visit to Ethiopia. This is a country that I have followed over
the decades with a great deal of interest, and it is very satisfying to actually be here and to
talk to people about the remarkable changes that are going on in your country today. I am
going to end by talking about this identity issue that was just referred to, but my talk is actually
going to be about developmental states, because this is a subject that I have been quite
interested in over the years. I do not think I can give Ethiopia much specific advice, but I do
think that an understanding of the way that developmental states have and have not worked
in other parts of the world is very important.
