Statement/News Release | Andrew Wilson

Statement from Andrew Wilson, CIPE’s Executive Director

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, sent shockwaves throughout the world. The unexpected nature of the invasion and the anticipated swift fall of Kyiv and the Ukrainian government left many reeling. However, contrary to predictions, Ukraine demonstrated remarkable resilience over the past two years.

On the frontline, Ukrainians have pushed back Russian forces, reclaiming territory. On the home front, they have implemented reforms to bolster democratic institutions, tackle corruption, and deepen integration with the West. Their unwavering determination has earned widespread admiration worldwide as they defend their country and its freedom.

Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine underscores the persistent threat of authoritarianism to democracy and the sovereignty of neighboring nations. As Ukraine resiliently defends its autonomy, it emphasizes the critical need for global solidarity in countering such aggression.

Throughout this challenging time, CIPE has supported Ukraine, assisting our private sector partners to respond to the humanitarian needs facing Ukrainian internally displaced persons and refugees, all the while keeping the economy running.

As the war enters its third year, CIPE’s commitment to Ukraine remains steadfast and unwavering. Our core mission of strengthening democracy worldwide guides our continued support. In Ukraine, CIPE will continue to work with our partners to foster free enterprise and democratic governance, assisting Ukrainians as they fight for freedom and a democratic way of life.
