Communications Intern



The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)’s Communications team is seeking a creative, motivated Intern who is eager to learn new skills while working with a four-member team at an international nonprofit in Washington, D.C. The Communications Intern will serve as a resource for CIPE staff members on content curation, website management, video editing, writing and editing, and social media.

Reports To: Senior Communications Manager, Communications Department

Timeframe: All interns are expected to start by June 15, 2019 and must be able to commit to a minimum of 20 and maximum of 40 hours per week. This position is unpaid; a transportation stipend is provided.

Learning Objectives:

  • Improve skills in multimedia editing, including but not limited to social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn), video editing, and photography
  • Develop increased analytical skills by reviewing performance of published materials
  • Learn to develop strategies to create digital marketing and media plans
  • Strengthen knowledge in communications research
  • Learn copyediting skills by working on content for CIPE’s Development Blog
  • Understand the culture and practice of communications in the international development field

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Contribute to CIPE’s Development Blog and assist with copy-editing articles
  • Support publication efforts through multimedia editing and design
  • Learn to how aid regional teams with photo and video filming, editing, and distribution
  • Assist with website maintenance and updated design implementation
  • Assist in production of the Democracy That Delivers podcast by editing, executing and publishing content
  • Research and create media lists by subject matter experts and relevant topics to CIPE mission and work
  • Assist in preparing communications media plans for upcoming international events
  • Liaise with teams to determine further communications needs
  • Assist with planning and organizing CIPE events with between 30 and 150+ attendees

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student or recent graduate with public relations, communications, journalism, film, telecommunications, graphic design, or marketing majors preferred; liberal arts majors will also be considered
  • Experience with website curation and maintenance
  • Adobe Suite or other video/photo/graphic editing experience
  • Interest in international development and international relations
  • Experience with writing and copyediting
  • Positive attitude and eagerness to learn about communications and CIPE’s initiatives
