Eugenia (“Genie”) Kemble

CIPE mourns the passing of Eugenia (“Genie”) Kemble, a champion of democracy and past executive director of the Free Trade Union Institute. A predecessor of the Solidarity Center, the Free Trade Union Institute promoted democracy and freedom of association worldwide and was the leading international supporter of Poland’s Solidarity union in the 1980s. As the AFL-CIO’s representative to the Democracy Program, Kemble played a key role in the formation of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in 1983. She backed the NED’s pluralist vision of democracy assistance, which included free enterprise and the participation of representative business organizations. Kemble was a great friend and supporter of the work of the National Endowment for Democracy, including CIPE.
