West Bank/Gaza – As part of a CIPE-supported project to increase transparency and accountability in the Palestinian private sector through effective corporate governance, the Palestine Governance Institute (PGI) convened a workshop in Ramallah entitled “The Role of an Audit in Fostering Corporate Governance.” Eighty-five participants attended the event, including auditors, academics, senior officials, and private sector leaders. Speakers included: PGI Executive Director Dr. Hisham Awartani, Governor of the Palestine Monetary Authority Dr. Jehad El-Wazeer, and Director of the Deloitte Audit Corporation in Palestine Hanna Natour. During his presentation, Dr. Awartani proposed that external auditors include an assessment of corporate governance for client firms and presented a list of corporate governance indicators auditors could use when conducting this assessment. Attendees supported Dr. Awartani’s proposal and encouraged PGI to pursue this goal.

West Bank/Gaza – PGI held an educational workshop entitled “Modern Corporate Governance: Basic Concepts” at the School of Law at An-Najah University. PGI Executive Director Dr. Hisham Awartani gave a presentation on corporate governance and explained its connection to democracy and the market economy. Attendees included 72 students and faculty members.
