Weekly Update: South Asia

Nepal – CIPE partner Samriddhi, the Prosperity Foundation, held a panel session of its Econ-ity public forum on the Draft Indo-Nepal Power Cooperation Agreement, with Prakash Sharan Mahat of the Nepali Congress, Lila Mani Pokhrel of the UCPN Maoists, PC Lohani of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and Dharmendra Bastola of the CPN Maoists. Participants discussed recommendations for improvements to the Agreement, which included price-setting mechanisms and prospects for a power trading company in Nepal.

Weekly Update: MENA

Iraq – The Kurdistan Economic Development Organization (KEDO) recently published its CIPE-supported policy paper entitled "Reform of Iraqi Kurdistan’s Regional Budget" and distributed it to public and private sector institutions in the Kurdistan region. KEDO presented the policy paper to the Minister of Finance, Sulaymaniyah University, the Economists Syndicate in Sulaymaniyah, and the Economic Forum. The Kurdistan regional parliament has requested copies for further distribution.

Weekly Update: Latin America & the Caribbean

Bolivia – Fundación Milenio released its weekly economic analysis bulletin. This edition examined key indicators of Bolivia’s economic performance, including gross domestic product, per capita income, and public investment. These economic analysis bulletins are available for download in Spanish on Milenio’s website.

Weekly Update: Eurasia

Albania – Executive Director of the Albanian Center for Economic Research Zef Preci and Chairman of the Facon Chamber of Commerce Gjergji Gjika participated in a televised economic debate on the business climate in Albania. The program, “Te besh Ekonomi” (Doing Economics), is a weekly talk-show broadcasted by Albania’s first 24-hour news channel, which has the largest market share of all news channels in the country.

Weekly Update: Asia

Cambodia - The Cambodian Federation of Employers and Business Associations conducted a training program for four industry groups with a focus on basic financial management, and communications and skills training. Training for these new and developing associations is crucial to CIPE’s long-term goal of developing a network of representative and effective business associations in the country.

Weekly Update: Africa

Washington, DC – As part of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), CIPE participated in the Private Sector and Civil Society Partnership Expo where 500 young leaders from throughout Africa learned more about organizations and resources available to them once they return to their home countries. CIPE Program Officers Julie Craig, Maiko Nakagaki, and Erica Poff met with the fellows at the CIPE table and shared information about CIPE’s work in sub-Saharan Africa as well as CIPE’s youth programming.

Washington, DC – CIPE’s Board of Directors met at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to review and approve CIPE’s 2012 strategy. The Board also reviewed new proposals for Yemen and Belarus, accepted organizational financial reports, and approved new governance guidelines for members, which will be available soon on the CIPE website.
