CIPE Deputy Director named co-chair of working group at Society for International Development- Washington; CIPE hosts event on the role of the private sector in Syria’s future; 50 university students attend youth leadership and entrepreneurship program in Ecuador

Weekly Update: Eurasia

Kyrgyzstan – The Corporate Governance School (CGS) held two seminars for 17 members of auditing committees on boards of directors in state-run companies. Corporate governance experts presented on the responsibilities of internal control systems. On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest, participants rated the usefulness of the information and presentations at 4.8. Knowledge tests indicated improvement in participants’ understanding of the topic. The average participant score on the test was 20 points higher following the seminars.

Ukraine – CIPE Ukraine launched a four-day training seminar in Lviv for 30 leaders of Ukrainian business associations. The seminar, which is the second of three planned for the group, included sessions on resource management, public-private dialogue, and anti-corruption initiatives in the private sector. CIPE Ukraine director Nataliya V. Balandina and program manager Zoia Tsybrova organized the program.

Kyrgyzstan – The Development Policy Institute (DPI) held a press conference on local budget-making processes for 22 journalists from Osh, Jalal-Abad, and Batken regions. Following the event, journalists published three articles in regional media outlets.

Azerbaijan – The Entrepreneurship Development Foundation and the Baku Political Studies Program organized a three-day seminar outside of Baku for 35 Azerbaijani mid-career professionals to discuss the role of youth in promoting market-based economic reform. The purpose of the seminar was to encourage openness and knowledge-sharing amongst colleagues to build consensus on needed areas for reform.

Ukraine – CIPE Washington program staff conducted a series of briefings and consultations during the week of December 10 in Kyiv with past and potential CIPE partners, as well as recently elected public officials with commitments to entrepreneurial issues. CIPE Program Assistant Rachel Grossman and Program Officer Frank Brown met with parliamentarians Alexandra Kuzhel and Ksenia Lyapina to discuss what business-related legislation may be introduced in the new session of the country’s Verhovna Rada. They also briefed U.S.

Azerbaijan – The Baku Education Information Center (BEIC) took part in the annual A2 International Education Fair – attended by 5,000 people. During the fair, BEIC distributed 400 copies of an announcement for youth to participate in an economic and entrepreneurship development seminar series, a new CIPE-funded program.

Armenia – On June 7, a group of Armenian businesspeople representing various business associations and chambers of commerce visited CIPE headquarters in Washington, DC, as part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program, to learn about CIPE’s approach to working with the private sector and recent CIPE programming in the Caucasus.

Azerbaijan – On May 3, the Entrepreneurship Development Foundation (EDF) held a focus group with 14 young Azerbaijanis who had completed CIPE’s Development Institute. As part of the course, the youth group, comprised of university students and young professionals in business and economic-oriented non-governmental organizations, met each Saturday from September 2011 to April 2012, to listen to and discuss lectures on various economic topics, and on how these topics relate to the role of institutions and
