Afghanistan – CIPE conducted three training seminars for legislative aides of the National Assembly. More than 40 participants attended each seminar, which covered value-added taxation, monetary policy, and the Afghanistan banking system.

Afghanistan – This week final examinations were given to students in Nangarhar Province enrolled in CIPE’s Tashabos high school entrepreneurship course. In the exams, 89.4 percent of tenth grade students scored 80 to 100 on the test; 92.5 percent of eleventh grade students scored 80 to 100; and 69.7 percent of twelfth grade students scored 80 to 100.

Afghanistan CIPE conducted a training seminar on “Principles of Trade Contracts” for 18 members of the lower house of Afghanistan’s Parliament, including several members of the new Parliamentary Business Caucus. Currently, a draft law on trade contracts is being debated in Parliament, and the training session aims to ensure that members of parliament are more informed in considering relevant issues and casting their votes.

Afghanistan – CIPE conducted a training seminar for members of the Economic Commission of the Ghazni and Logar Provincial Councils, as well as for a working group from the Logar Province (comprised of other members of the Provincial Council, government officials, and business leaders). The seminar focused on the role of business advocacy in a democracy and effective advocacy strategies. CIPE also held a discussion on the informal economy with the Economic Commission members and held a session on implementing the National Business Agenda.

Afghanistan – Twenty members of the Afghanistan National Assembly announced on June 11 the launch of a parliamentary Business Caucus. The Caucus will be comprised of Members of Parliament (MPs) who are focused on strengthening the country’s economy through investment, commerce, business growth and job creation. The Caucus will serve as a forum for regular discussion of issues affecting the business climate in Afghanistan and to strengthen legislation needed for economic reforms.

Afghanistan – This week CIPE conducted pre-testing at 40 high schools for students enrolled in the Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course. The scores will be compared to the results of the final test given at the end of the school year. In addition, CIPE conducted exhibitions for Tashabos students to display their handicrafts and other products. The exhibitions, held at Shirino Girls High School and Chilsotoon Girls High School, provide an opportunity for students gain experience in sales, marketing, and customer service.

Afghanistan – Program Officer Gregg Willhauck is in Kabul meeting with a wide range of local partners. Willhauck met with Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of the National Assembly Mirwais Yasini to discuss the planned launch of a Business Caucus in Parliament and the member of parliament (MP) training program, as well as with nine MPs from the lower house and upper houses to discuss these same topics.

Afghanistan –Staff from CIPE’s Afghanistan office met with two key parliamentarians this week to continue the process of establishing a business caucus in the Afghan National Assembly. Deputy Speaker of the Lower House Mirwais Yasini and member of parliament Samia Sadaat, who has taken part in CIPE training programs on economics for parliamentarians, both pledged their support for the business caucus.

Afghanistan – The Afghanistan Investment Support Agency, in cooperation with the Herat Traders’ Association, held a three-day exhibition of goods. Approximately 90 traders set up booths, including two students from CIPE’s Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course. Participating in the exhibition gave the students an opportunity to sell their products, network with traders, and gain experience in marketing.
