Weekly Update: South Asia

Nepal – CIPE partner Samriddhi, the Prosperity Foundation held a session of its Econ-iti public forum on April 7 on “Tax Implications on the Private Sector of Nepal.” Twenty people attended, including legal and accounting professionals, corporate finance managers, and entrepreneurs. Samriddhi also held a series of consultations with stakeholders on “Economic Aspirations and Policy Priorities in Nepal” to gather feedback for their policy research.

Afghanistan CIPE partner the Federation of Afghanistan Craftsmen and Traders (FACT) conducted a conference on March 17 on access to land for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), at which FACT outlined policy recommendations to improve the allocation of land for small businesses.

Afghanistan – Following the February 27 Afghanistan National Business Forum, CIPE partner the Federation of Afghanistan Craftsmen and Traders (FACT) prepared a list of policy recommendations on access to land for businesses. FACT shared its recommendations with the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which will present them to the presidential candidates.

Afghanistan – On February 19, the Federation of Afghanistan Craftsmen and Traders (FACT) met with the mayor of Kabul to discuss FACT’s proposal to allocate land for confectionary businesses. The mayor agreed to the proposal and instructed the planning directorate to provide the land and prepare a blueprint and mapping documents for the businesses. The proposal is part of an ongoing FACT advocacy campaign supported by CIPE.

Afghanistan – CIPE Program Officer for Afghanistan Gregg Willhauck travelled to Afghanistan this week to meet with various stakeholders. Willhauck met with U.S. Embassy and USAID representatives to discuss CIPE’s upcoming program of Provincial Business Agendas to be conducted in three provinces.

Afghanistan On January 22, CIPE conducted a training seminar in Kunar Province for 14 people, including members of the Provincial Council, the Mayor of Asadabad (the provincial capital), other government officials, and business leaders. The seminar covered effective business advocacy and the informal economy.

Afghanistan – CIPE Afghanistan Country Director Mohammad Nasib participated in the December 9 International Day Against Corruption event, which was organized by the Afghan NGO Coordination Bureau, the Afghan Civil Society Coalition Against Corruption (of which CIPE is a member), and the Parliamentary Anti-Corruption Caucus. All of the country’s presidential candidates were invited to this event and asked to sign a pledge to fight corruption; four candidates attended, while three were represented by their running mates.

Afghanistan – CIPE and the Afghanistan Ministry of Education awarded certificates to 15,000 high school students who completed CIPE’s three-year Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course. The Tashabos curriculum covers topics on entrepreneurship, business, and leadership, and prepares students to participate in the market economy and become more active citizens.

Afghanistan – CIPE Afghanistan organized the inaugural meeting of the Parliamentary Business Caucus on November 16 in Kabul, with the participation of 18 Members of Parliament and representatives of leading business associations. The attendees included First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Mirwais Yasini, First Secretary of the Parliament Sayed Ikram, and Chairman of the Economic Commission of the Parliament Mir Rahman Rahmani.
