Democracy in Action: Youth

In anticipation of International Youth Day on August 12, this issue of Democracy in Action highlights CIPE’s commitment to youth. With young people leading democratic reform efforts around the world, CIPE's youth programming seeks to empower and engage young people as the political and business leaders of tomorrow. Weekly Update: South Asia

Pakistan/Afghanistan – The Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) held its second board meeting in Karachi. Participants discussed a range of key issues, including launching a membership drive and setting advocacy priorities. In addition, members of the PAJCCI board attended the “My Karachi” trade exposition, where representatives of firms engaged in cross-border trade were able to discuss business opportunities.

Afghanistan On July 11, the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MOCI) organized a conference on the development of Afghanistan’s carpet industry. Participants included the Deputy Minister of the MOCI, the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Senator Hafiz Abdul Qayum, the head of the Carpet Association, and the head of MOCI’s SME department, as well as CIPE staff.

Afghanistan – CIPE organized a meeting this week between several leading businesswomen and ten of the top students in the Tashabos high school entrepreneurship program. In partnership with the group Peace through Business, the businesswomen will mentor the students on a variety of topics over an eight week period. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Rohullah Ahamzi of the Afghanistan Investment Support Agency, which has committed to assist future Tashabos graduates.

Afghanistan – The Chahar Asyab Girls’ high school this week conducted an exhibition of products and handicrafts made by students participating in CIPE’s Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course. The exhibition gives students a chance to practice their business and marketing skills. In addition, students enrolled in Tashabos completed a pre-test of course material that will be compared to mid-term and final tests to evaluate their improvement.

Afghanistan – The Shirino and Ferdowsi girls’ high schools conducted exhibitions of products and handicrafts of students participating in CIPE’s Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course. The exhibition gives students a chance to practice their business and marketing skills.
