Weekly Update: South Asia

Afghanistan – Program Officer Gregg Willhauck is in Kabul meeting with a wide range of local partners. Willhauck met with Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of the National Assembly Mirwais Yasini to discuss the planned launch of a Business Caucus in Parliament and the member of parliament (MP) training program, as well as with nine MPs from the lower house and upper houses to discuss these same topics.

Afghanistan –Staff from CIPE’s Afghanistan office met with two key parliamentarians this week to continue the process of establishing a business caucus in the Afghan National Assembly. Deputy Speaker of the Lower House Mirwais Yasini and member of parliament Samia Sadaat, who has taken part in CIPE training programs on economics for parliamentarians, both pledged their support for the business caucus.

Afghanistan – The Afghanistan Investment Support Agency, in cooperation with the Herat Traders’ Association, held a three-day exhibition of goods. Approximately 90 traders set up booths, including two students from CIPE’s Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course. Participating in the exhibition gave the students an opportunity to sell their products, network with traders, and gain experience in marketing.

Afghanistan – This week CIPE printed 44,000 textbooks for students in CIPE’s Tashaboshigh school entrepreneurship courses for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. CIPE will distribute the textbooks to participating schools in Kabul, Parwan, Bamiyan, and Nangahar Provinces.

Afghanistan CIPE conducted a training seminar for 13 members of the Provincial Councils of Herat and Badghis responsible for economic development issues. The participants discussed how to move from informality to the formal sector, and how a successful democracy must respond to the economic needs of the people.

Afghanistan The Federation of Afghanistan Craftsmen and Traders conducted a conference, “The Challenges and Problems of Taxpayers.” The conference, which was held as part of a CIPE-supported advocacy project, focused on proposed amendments to simplify the tax code, reducing corruption by lowering tax evasion, and a tax holiday to help spur business.

Bangkok, Thailand – A collective advocacy strategy has gained momentum in the fight against corruption in Thailand. The Thai Institute of Directors (IOD) and CIPE launched a project in July 2010 to cultivate private sector support for national anti-corruption initiatives with the long-term goal of reducing corruption and promoting transparency in the Thai marketplace. Weekly Update: South Asia

Afghanistan – CIPE Afghanistan Senior Program Officer Lailuma Social attended a workshop organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to discuss the launch of a business incubator for small and medium-sized businesses in Afghanistan. The incubator, to be established with assistance from the Indian government, will provide technology and machinery to spur business growth in Afghanistan. CIPE will explore opportunities for graduates of the Tashabos youth entrepreneurship program to be linked to the incubator.
