EGYPT

CIPE has been a key player in corporate governance initiatives for more than 6 years in Egypt, helping to establish the Egyptian Institute of Directors (EIOD) in 2004 and draft the national corporate governance code. CIPE works closely with the Egyptian Junior Business Association (EJB), which established a taskforce on corporate governance and published a manual, Corporate Governance in Family Businesses – the first of its kind in the MENA region. The manual presents a practical approach for family businesses to implement good corporate governance.

MOROCCO

TURKEY

CIPE works with the Corporate Governance Association of Turkey (COGAT) to foster an enduring culture of corporate governance in family-owned businesses throughout Anatolia. Currently, workshops and direct consultations provide firms with practical tools to implement good corporate governance. Throughout 2008-2009, CIPE and COGAT will be developing a series of governance guidelines specific to non-listed Turkish companies. In 2006-2007, COGAT offered a series of workshops on “Effective Boards and Corporate Governance” and “Governance of Family Business: Problems and Recommended Actions” in Kocaeli, Izmir, Diyarbakir, Kayseri, Antalya and Eskişehir.

LEBANON

With CIPE support, Lebanese Transparency Association (LTA) facilitated the establishment of the Lebanese Corporate Governance Task Force, which produced a corporate governance code for SMEs in 2006. CIPE and LTA are now working on establishing a corporate governance code for publicly-listed companies in Lebanon which is due to be launched in March 2009. At the same time, LTA is compiling a collection of case studies on governance in small and family-owned businesses to serve as a practical guide for good governance implementation.  LTA is also advocating for legal reform for corporate governance by providing a series of recommendations for amendment of the Lebanese commercial code.

REGIONAL

CIPE is working with the Union of Arab Banks (UAB) to develop general guidelines for use by Arab banks to adopt best corporate governance practices. The guidelines, currently in draft form, are being reviewed and finalized, with a launch slated for early 2009. CIPE is also supporting UAB to develop a complementary corporate governance toolkit that will aid member banks in the practical application of governance standards. In 2005, CIPE worked with UAB to conduct a regional survey on Corporate Governance in the Banking Sector that serves as an important baseline for banking practices. For more information, visit, www.uabonline.org.

CIPE maintains an Arabic website that is specific to corporate governance:  www.hawkama.net. The website contains information about the importance of corporate governance, up-to-date coverage of regional corporate governance initiatives, and resource links. CIPE produces periodical newsletters and articles in both Arabic and English on corporate governance trends.

OMAN

In partnership with the Omani Economic Association (OEA), CIPE held a workshop in Muscat, Oman in February 2008 to discuss the potential creation and development of a corporate governance task force in Oman. The workshop was attended by prominent Omani public and private sector representatives, civil society organizations and academia, who expressed interest in creating such a national initiative to promote the improvement of corporate governance practice in Oman. For more information, visit www.oea-oman.org/index.htm.

JORDAN

In November 2007, CIPE conducted a workshop in Amman to bring together key stakeholders to create a Task Force on Corporate Governance. CIPE has also supported the Jordanian Corporate Governance Association, including a survey to assess the applicability of corporate governance principles in Jordan and the establishment of a website. In 2005-2006, CIPE and JCGA organized several seminars and the Jordanian Forum on Corporate Governance that brought together 50 private sector representatives from business associations to assess corporate governance in the MENA region and in Jordan.

PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES

CIPE partner the Center for Private Sector Development (CPSD) formed a multi-stakeholder corporate governance task force in mid-2007 composed of representatives from the private and public sector. The Palestinian National Corporate Governance Committee created a draft code, which is currently undergoing peer review by international organizations. The final version is slated for completion in 2009. Concurrently, CPSD organized several awareness-raising workshops on governance for banks and listed companies all around the West Bank. In 2008-2009, a further round of workshops will focus on code implementation. For further information visit, www.cpsd.ps.
