National Chambers of Commerce: A Primer on the Organization and Role of Chamber Systems

In the emerging business environment, characterized by
greater reliance on market forces and private enterprise, there
is an increasing recognition of the need for stronger private
sector involvement in developing national economies.
Therefore, business organizations representing the private
sector find themselves challenged to advocate the needs of
private enterprise through an effective dialogue with
government; to complement and take over efforts and
responsibilities of government in the field of business
promotion; and to reply to a growing demand for services from
the business community.

This primer focuses on chambers of commerce and industry,
the most important form of multi-sectoral business organizations
throughout the world. The objective is to give an
introduction to different existing chamber systems, including a
comparative analysis of the structure, status, and range of
activities of chambers in selected countries.

Case studies from both developed and developing countries
are considered. The primer is addressed to chamber officials
and professionals, government policy-makers and other
interested readers in order to provide a foundation for
discussing the future role of chambers in modern society.
