The Center for Economic Orientation
in the Dominican Republic launched a legislative advisory program
in 1986 sponsored by CIPE. In concise reports, the Center analyzed
economic laws under congressional consideration, summarized
the effects of legislation on the public sector, private sector,
national budget, and legal system, and concluded with specific
recommendations for enactment, repeal, rejection, or
amendment of the bills under consideration. The reports were
distributed among legislators and the general public timed to
coincide with the congressional schedule. Through these reports,
the Center was able to inform lawmakers, the media and the public
of the consequences of the specific economic laws and regulations
and provide information to the media and public interest groups
to assist them in holding legislators accountable. The reports
were widely used by business associations and the media.
