The Private Entrepreneurs Confederation from the Timis County (PECT) was established in 1990 and is led by President Radu Nicosevici. PECT is a noteworthy member of the Strategic Alliance of Business Associations (SABA), and provides strong, resourceful leadership within that organization. Although PECT is the lead organization for this project, cooperation with SABA (and its country-wide network) will be important to achieving success. SABA is an informal network of business associations established in September 1996 to promote and protect an honest and competitive business environment and the development of the small and medium enterprises within RomaniaÕs emerging market-oriented democracy.

Corporate Governance: An Effective and Efficient Tool for Romanian Companies An effective and efficient way to foster corporate governance reform is to develop higher operating and reporting standards among private and public enterprises. Basic among these efforts, are to have stronger boards of directors, regulations on shareholder rights and accepted standards for financial accountability and transparency. Through this project, the Private Entrepreneurs Confederation of Timis County (PECT), seeks to transform its growing influence into an effective, local leadership voice for advocating ethical business policies and practicesÑa necessary, nonpartisan voice that does not currently exist in Romania. PECT will work to extend the business knowledge and leadership skills of itÕs members and will cooperate in this endeavor with the Strategic Alliance of Business Associations (SABA). In addition to organizing a Corporate Governance National Task Force, training events, public hearings and a national conference will be the core activities contributing to the projectÕs success. Strengthening the active participation of business leaders and public policy activists in the development of a sound business environment and transparency throughout Romania will enhance democratic development in this emerging market country.
