Under the project, RCCI succeeded in
establishing a regional Council on Shareholders Rights. The
members of the Council included distinguished representatives
of Ryazan region business associations, members of Boards
of Directors, and unions' chairmen. The status and impressive
organizing abilities of the members of the Council contributed
a lot to the fact that the Council's activities received broad
attention from the regional government, business associations
and media. RCCI has enjoyed an impressive amount of media
coverage of the project - 34 articles were published in local
newspapers and magazines, and posted on RCCI's website.
During the period of the project, RCCI's team provided 206
consultations on corporate governance to interested stakeholders.
According to RCCI, about 45% of the consultations related
to the joint-stock legislation of the Russian Federation,
30% to the activities of the Boards of Directors and procedures
of shareholders' meetings, 20% to the general corporate governance
regulations, and 5% to the corporate rights of the shareholders.
According to RCCI, many organizations and private businessmen
received several consultations over the course of the project.
The Chamber receives numerous calls every week requesting
copies of a corporate governance brochure that has been produced
under this project.
The Council on Shareholders Rights created within this project
has established and drawn attention to key written corporate
governance standards, thus encouraging local companies to
adopt them.
The Ryazan Chamber has initiated and begun to develop a
good relationship with the Institute of Stock Market and Management
(ISMM) in Moscow, one of CIPE's grantees under separate funding.
ISMM is promoting the establishment of a Russian Institute
of Directors (RID), with which CIPE plans to work under a
future component of this project. This future project component
will entail the development of pilot curriculum on corporate
governance which will be used to train corporate directors
from all over the NIS. Furthermore, CIPE and the RID also
plan to provide a forum for the development and coordination
of a Eurasian regional network of corporate governance promoters
who will exchange materials, ideas and practices.
