Weekly Update: Latin America and the Caribbean

Bolivia – Fundación Milenio released its weekly economic analysis bulletin, featuring an analysis of the real inflation in Bolivia. These economic analysis bulletins form part of CIPE’s and Milenio’s efforts to cultivate a more informed citizenship in the area of economic policy. They are available for download in Spanish on Milenio’s website.

Weekly Update: Eurasia

Ukraine – CIPE Ukraine launched a four-day training seminar in Lviv for 30 leaders of Ukrainian business associations. The seminar, which is the second of three planned for the group, included sessions on resource management, public-private dialogue, and anti-corruption initiatives in the private sector. CIPE Ukraine director Nataliya V. Balandina and program manager Zoia Tsybrova organized the program.

Weekly Update: Asia

China – The Unirule Institute of Economics published its 2012 Open Government Information (OGI) report in English on its website: www.unirule.org.cn/SecondWeb/Article.asp?ArticleID=3497. This project aims to raise public awareness of China’s regulations on government information disclosure. The OGI report assessed the information transparency level of the three selected provincial governments in Beijing, Guiyang, and Yinchuan.

Kenya – Simon Sangale, chairman of CIPE partner the Kenya Association of Street Vendors and Informal Traders (KENASVIT), was invited to serve on the Micro and Small Enterprise (MSE) Board Authority. The Authority was created under Kenya’s recently passed MSE bill and includes 11 private sector representatives to advise the MSE Authority under the Ministry of Labor on all issues affecting Kenya’s small businesses, the management of a small business fund, and the establishment of a small business arbitration court.

Integrity by Design: Egypt's New Democratic Institutions and the Fight Against Corruption

CAIRO, EGYPT – In its continuing effort to build an institutional framework to promote integrity and combat corruption in Egypt, the Egypt office of the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), working in partnership with the Federation of Economic Development Associations and the United Group, organized a conference on “Combating Corruption between the State and the Society” on February 27, 2013. The event was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Young International Writers Explore Challenges of Youth Entrepreneurship - Winners Announced in Essay Competition

Washington, DC -- Ten young writers from around the world have been selected as winners in the Center for International Private Enterprise’s (CIPE) fifth annual International Youth Essay Competition. The winning essays were selected from more than 300 entries in three categories relating to youth and entrepreneurship.

Weekly Update: South Asia

Afghanistan The Impressive Consultancy Company and the Women’s Economic Empowerment Center conducted an exhibition of products made by women-owned businesses on February 14 to mark Valentine’s Day. Several students from CIPE’s Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course participated in the event, setting up booths to display and sell their products, providing them with a chance to improve their marketing skills.

Cote d’Ivoire – The Federation des Artisans de la Cote d’Ivoire (FEDACI) was recently elected to the presidency of the Confederations des Artisans de l’Afrique de L’Ouest (CAAO) a coordinating West African confederation of national federations of artisans. As the presiding organization of the CAAO, FEDACI will be responsible for leading collective actions in designing and implementing national and regional advocacy initiatives on private sector policy reforms.
