Weekly Update: Africa

Côte D’Ivoire – CIPE hosted a policy roundtable forum in Abidjan for 27 participants representing the public and private sectors on the current regulatory framework that governs Côte d’Ivoire’s micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) sector. Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Côte D’Ivoire Chamber of Commerce, the Côte D’Ivoire National Employers’ Association, the Ivorian Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises, and various media outlets.

China – In the latest of its bi-weekly series of policy discussion forums, the Unirule Institute of Economics hosted a discussion about early Marxist intellectuals in Russia and elsewhere, highlighting the glaring discrepancies between their beliefs and the actual application of communism in the early People’s Republic of China.

Weekly Update: Eurasia

Moldova – The Institute for Development and Social Initiatives and the National Business Agenda (NBA) Network of business associations across Moldova have prepared a list of proposals for key reform areas for the new government to include in its Activity Program. A new government is expected to form in the next few weeks.

Weekly Update: Latin America and the Caribbean

Bolivia – Fundación Milenio released its weekly economic analysis bulletin, featuring an analysis of the economic growth of the department of Tajira. These economic analysis bulletins form part of CIPE’s and Milenio’s efforts to cultivate a more informed citizenship in the area of economic policy. They are available for download in Spanish on Milenio’s website.

Egypt – CIPE Egypt Country Director Randa Al-Zoghbi delivered a presentation to senior management of the Egyptian Central Audit Bureau on CIPE’s U.S. Agency for International Development-supported anti-corruption program. In her presentation, Zoghbi highlighted the importance of adopting an institutional approach to corruption and outlined CIPE’s work with the private sector to address this important issue.

Weekly Update: South Asia

Afghanistan – The Afghanistan Investment Support Agency, in cooperation with the Herat Traders’ Association, held a three-day exhibition of goods. Approximately 90 traders set up booths, including two students from CIPE’s Tashabos youth entrepreneurship course. Participating in the exhibition gave the students an opportunity to sell their products, network with traders, and gain experience in marketing.

Dr. Jesus Estanislao wins democracy award

CHICAGO, Illinois – The Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA) announced yesterday that their common Chairman, Dr. Jesus P. Estanislao FICD, has been named as the recipient of the 2013 Hernando De Soto Award for Democracy.

Weekly Update: Asia

Cambodia – CIPE partner Silaka conducted a series of training programs on procurement monitoring and anti-corruption for the members of the Joint Procurement Monitoring Committee (JPMC), a coalition of NGOs and private businesses in the province of Kampong Thom. Silaka led the effort to establish this coalition and is building its capacity to eventually serve as an anti-corruption watchdog for provincial government procurement.
