Iraq – CIPE partner the Sahara Economic Development Organization (SEDO) secured commitments from the government to improve the Salahaddin tourism industry, as a result of a series of discussions with officials. Based on recommendations set forth in the CIPE-supported Salahaddin Provincial Business Agenda (PBA), officials agreed to improve security for tourists, allocate funds to refurbish UNESCO landmarks such as the Samarra museum, and support several other PBA recommendations.

Weekly Update: Latin America and the Caribbean

Bolivia – Fundación Milenio released its 158th economic analysis bulletin. This bulletin features an analysis of the challenges the Basel III global regulatory standard is posing for the Bolivian banking system. It concludes that even though Basel III aims to reduce the risks in the banking system, higher level of political intervention could instead increase the risks and cancel out improvements made in previous years.

Weekly Update: Southeast Europe and the Caucasus

Moldova – Following an August 9 meeting of the National Business Agenda’s (NBA) Coordinating Council, the National Participation Council, and representatives of the Ministry of Justice and State Chancellery, the NBA network of business associations and chambers of commerce forwarded their recommendations for a more inclusive policy planning and review process to relevant government agencies.

Kyrgyzstan – From August 6-10, 2012, CIPE partner the Corporate Governance School (CGS) established an Expert Group of three professionals who are experienced practitioners in corporate governance. The group is tasked with designing a curriculum for educational seminars for corporate directors of Kyrgyz companies, selecting seminar facilitators and preparing materials for a new corporate governance manual for companies.

Philippines – The Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and Pacific (ADFIAP) published an article (www.adfiap.org/news/adfiap-participates-in-sme-corporate-governance-conference) on the recent anti-corruption conference of the Hills Center for Corporate Governance at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

Weekly Update: Africa

Nigeria – CIPE partner the Enugu Coalition of Business and Professional Associations (ECOBPA) met with their local government tax advisor and the executive director of the Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue as part of a series of dialogues to address multiple taxation and levies in Enugu state. The meetings, which centered on identifying and clarifying specific taxes and levies that the local government collects, resulted in ECOBPA identifying two taxes that the local government is not legally permitted to collect.

CIPE Youth Essay Competition Seeks Young Voices on Entrepreneurship and Democracy

Washington, DC – The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) invites youth (aged 18-30) from around the world to tell their stories about entrepreneurship and democracy for CIPE’s fifth Youth Essay Competition.

In this year’s competition, CIPE is accepting essays in three categories:

Weekly Update: South Asia

Afghanistan – CIPE assisted the Ansary Boys High School to conduct a business proposal writing competition for students in CIPE’s Tashabos entrepreneurship course. 113 students submitted proposals and the top ten gave presentations to judges who awarded first, second, and third places. The top students will participate in a final competition at the end of the year between all the schools in the program.
