Afghanistan – CIPE Program Officer for Afghanistan Gregg Willhauck travelled to Afghanistan this week to meet with various stakeholders. Willhauck met with U.S. Embassy and USAID representatives to discuss CIPE’s upcoming program of Provincial Business Agendas to be conducted in three provinces.

Latin America & the Caribbean

Bolivia – Fundación Milenio released its weekly economic analysis bulletin, featuring an analysis of the capital flight happening across the region. These economic analysis bulletins form part of CIPE’s and Milenio’s efforts to cultivate a more informed citizenship in the area of economic policy.

Africa

Nigeria– As a result of CIPE supported capacity building, the Association of Nigerian Business Women Network (ANBWN) held its first general meeting. Eighteen people attended the meeting representing 14 association members. Some of the issues discussed included registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission and sustainability through a dues system.

Eurasia

Albania – CIPE Senior Consultant Carmen Stanila facilitated a workshop with ten participants, representing National Business Forum members, from leading Albanian business associations and chambers of commerce. Stanila led the Forum members in discussions about the future of the coalition, including its internal governance structure, fundraising, and growing membership. Participants unanimously agreed that the coalition should focus on the issue of private sector informality in 2015.

Nicaragua – Red de Empresarias de Nicaragua (REN) hosted a mid-program meeting with the mentorship program participants, which included micro-entrepreneurs, university students, and REN mentors.  At the meeting, the interns presented what they have learned thus far from their experiences.

Middle East & North Africa

Algeria – CIPE Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Abdulwahab Alkebsi and Program Officer for North Africa Pamela Beecroft joined CIPE partner CARE (Cercle d’action et de réflexion autour de l’entreprise) to facilitate the first meeting of a private sector taskforce. The Taskforce and CARE will work to implement a national business agenda (NBA) process in Algeria, building a diverse coalition across sectors that will identify specific reforms to improve Algeria’s economy.

Asia

China– The Unirule Institute of Economics continued its series of public policy discussion forums in Beijing. The topic of the latest forum was “Implications of China’s Economic Growth.” Keynote speaker Professor Nie Huihua, a well-known scholar on the contemporary history of China, argued that understanding the implications of China’s economic growth is crucial to long-term development. Professor Nie pointed out that the costs of China’s rapid growth include problems such as corruption, poor governance, and environmental degradation.

South Asia Weekly Updates

Pakistan - CIPE conducted two events to coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week. One event was a focus group, “How Chambers can Promote Entrepreneurship,” which was conducted in collaboration with Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The second event was a youth private sector leaders' conference on the topic of “How Corruption Hampers Entrepreneurship,” held in partnership with the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
