At the meeting of the Algerian Corporate Governance Task Force today. With leadership from CIPE partner CARE and the Forum for Chiefs of Enterprises (FCE), as well as significant support from the Ministry of Small Business, they produced a Code of Corporate Governance that has been well received. At least 18 companies are actively supporting its promulgation—altogether so much support that CIPE support was really a much smaller role than originally requested. Today they are working out how to proceed in ensuring that the Code is adopted and has on-going support and advocacy by forming a more permanent Corporate Governance Center.

Oussama Safa from Lebanon is facilitating a lively strategic planning discussion as the group works out specifics of its intended mission, objectives and activities. Facilitated group meetings such as these are important to ensuring that an organization starts out with common understanding, a base of support, and some clear next steps to help it build momentum. We at CIPE don’t seek to create organizations—it almost never works when driven from outside anyway—but when there’s local drive like this, it can be the start of something truly meaningful. So back to the organizational questions at hand: how to engage, what role stakeholders, relationship vis-à-vis government, priority issues…it looks to be a full day!
