Democracy Video Challenge

Yesterday in New York, a unique partnership of media powerhouses, democracy activists and the U.S. government hosted a lauch event for the Democracy Video Challenge. Anyone in the world can have their 3 minutes of fame answering the question “Democracy is….” in a short video. Winners from every region of the world will come to the U.S., meet with democracy advocates, visit Hollywood studios and consult with new media experts.

It’s a new way to have people weigh in directly on various debates in democratic development and to hear from those who may be struggling to improve democracy in their own country.

Giving people a voice–globally, no less–is also a way of supporting their struggles, helping them feel less isolated, and building momentum for such efforts. Though not exclusively for youth, the Democracy Video Challenge has a young vibe about it. Check out the public service announcement (commercial) announcing the contest in multiple languages.

So far the Challenge has gotten good coverage, from New York Times to Variety magazine. Spread the word!
